THE PIVOT ROADMAP · STEP 3 OF 4

Train the Gap

Follow a short, credential-first plan with no wasted coursework — every hour justified against the job description.

Credential-First, Not Degree-First

Employers in hands-on roles read certificates and demonstrated ability before they read degrees. A targeted credential — CompTIA A+, HVAC EPA 608, a limited-energy license, or PLC fundamentals — is usually enough to open interviews.

Shape a 90-Day Plan

  • Weeks 1–3: the certification curriculum and its practice exams.
  • Weeks 4–6: hands-on reps on a trainer rig, a home lab, or shadowing.
  • Weeks 7–10: one documented repair or install project for your portfolio.
  • Weeks 11–13: application blitz and structured interview practice.

Justify Every Hour

Before adding any course, ask: does a posting in my target role require this? If the answer is no, it waits. No wasted coursework, no eight-hundred-hour detours.

Prove It Cheap

Used PLCs, small trainer rigs, and open-lab time are affordable. One documented project outranks a certificate you cannot describe from memory.
