Progression runs to senior field tech, crew lead, network/telecom specialist, and into network operations for people who develop the switching and routing side.
Technicians who pair field experience with certifications (CCNA and similar) become rare animals: people who can troubleshoot a fiber plant and the routing that runs on it.

Do I need an electrical license to be a low-voltage/network tech?
Low-voltage (data/comms) work is mostly unlicensed entry in the US; high-voltage or building-scale power remains licensed electrical work. Know your state’s low-voltage rules – they differ.
Is fiber splicing hard to learn?
It is precise, not hard: fusion splicing and testing follow documented procedure, and training is widely available. The scarcity comes from few people choosing it, which is exactly why fiber specialists are well paid.
Does this role lead somewhere beyond cabling?
Yes – into network operations, network engineering-adjacent roles, and telecom project work. The field years teach you physical-layer reality (what actually breaks), which engineers value once you add the certification layer.
