Building Automation Technician: The HVAC Controls Career Few Know About
Buildings are the world’s biggest energy consumer, and someone has to make their control systems actually work. Building automation (BAS) technicians program, calibrate, and troubleshoot the controllers, sensors, and graphics that run commercial HVAC – a high-demand role that links electrical skills with software logic.
What BAS technicians do
Building automation technicians keep a building’s mechanical brain honest: they install and configure controllers and sensors (temperature, pressure, CO2, flow), write sequences of operation so the chiller and air handler play nicely, and communicate to operators through graphics and alarms. Demand is durable – owners must operate buildings and, increasingly, report energy performance. The big operators and buildings run 24/7 regardless of economic cycles, though new-construction work does dip when capital spending does.
Do I need to know programming?
Not formal programming, but control logic is programming in disguise. If you can follow if-then sequencing and troubleshoot why a controller isn’t doing what the sequence graph says, you can learn the platform scripting.
Can I enter without HVAC experience?
